These new technologies added considerably to the data transfer speeds of the network increasing speeds to up to 3Mbps, which is about 20 times faster than 2G.
Currently there are two implementations of 4G network technology. These are WiMax which work in a similar way to Wi-Fi but at a much higher power level, and LTE which stands for Long Term Evolution. This provides a full Internet Protocol (IP) network architecture using packet switching. With LTE downlink data rates are 100 Mbps, which is over 30 times faster than 2G.
Both LTE and WiMax are only partial implementations of full 4G technologies which do not encompass a set of agreed standards; rather it is a wish list for the future which includes data transfer rates of up to 1 Gbps.
